Contrary to what one expects from the literature, this study shows that referential questions does not necessarily elicit longer or syntactically more complex answers from ESL students in Hong Kong. If teachers of English want to help their students produce more spoken output, they need to consider questioning strategies, and also students' attitudes towards questioning and answering behaviour in the classroom.
