Abstract

Language and content are interrelated such that without the requisite language ability, students cannot learn effectively in their non-language courses. If academic work in English is required of university students, it is critical to know whether they possess the necessary minimum language competence, and if not to take action.
This paper describes a modest study of English language carried out at Chinese University. It focuses on English language used for academic study. Results suggest that while CUHK is bilingual in teaching medium, whether or not individual students are bilingual is open to debate.
